فيما يشبه أفلام الخيال العلمي، لا تزال بلدة في ولاية بنسلفانيا الأمريكية مشتعلة بالنيران منذ أكثر من 50 عاماً، ولا يعرف بعد كيف بدأ هذا الحريق، إلا أن العلماء يعتقدون أن ظواهر كيميائية وراء استعار النيران طوال هذه السنوات.
وتقع بلدة سينتراليا التي لا تزال النيران مشتعلة فيها منذ عام 1962 فوق ما يمكن اعتباره أكبر رواسب الفحم في العالم، وكان هذا الفحم ولا يزال أهم مصدر للطاقة والكهرباء في المنطقة منذ بداية الثورة الصناعية.
مناجم الفحم
وفي القرن التاسع عشر قام عمال المناجم بتفجير أنفاق تحت الأرض للحصول على الفحم، لكن معظم هذه المناجم أصبحت مهجورة في القرن العشرين بحسب ما ذكرت صحيفة بيزنس إنسايدر الامريكية.
ولا يعرف أحد بشكل دقيق كيف اندلعت النيران للمرة الأولى في سنتراليا، لكن النظرية المرجحة بأن حرق النفايات في أحد مكبات القمامة أشعل عن طريق الخطأ الفحم عند مدخل أحد المناجم القديمة ثم انتشرت النيران عبر باقي المناجم.
تغذية النيران
ويقول الباحثون إن الفحم تشكل في المنطقة عبر ملايين السنين، بعد أن دفنت المستنقعات بشكل كامل بالمواد العضوية كالأشجار وجذور النباتات تحت الرمال والطين وغيرها من المواد الطبيعية.
وعندما يختلط الكربون الموجود في الفحم مع الأوكسجين يشتعل على الفور، ويمكن أن يبدأ بالاشتعال من تلقاء نفسه حتى لو لم يتم تغيذته من النيران في المناطق القريبة.
ويعتقد العلماء أن الأنفاق التي حفرها عمال المناجم في القرن التاسع عشر تعمل على تغذية النيران بشكل دائم، من خلال سحب الاوكسجين من السطح. وكلما احترق الفحم ينتشر اللهب شيئاً فشيئاً في المناطق المحيطة في دورة لا تتوقف من الحرائق.

before. I have a credenza from about the same time period as yours that has metal caps on the bottoms of the legs. These caps have that fabulous option to screw in or out for height, like many fridges and stoves have. I think it is possible to find such a solution for you, assuming the hairpins would mar the look of your credenza. (I don’t fully understand how the hair pins would work.)Also, I think your walls need some color! And maybe the art goes up and comes down because you’re not in love with the art.
Although it does bug me when comic artists don't adhere to the specific look of certain characters. Like when they draw Spidey or Mr. Fantastic really huge and muscly, or don't give Shazam his round face and squinty eyes. That 'anything goes' attitude means a lot of comic artists fall into the trap of having everyone they draw look pretty much the same.
